KIRKKOVUODEN 11. SUNNUNTAI – A 2026

Kaksi viikkoa sitten vietimme seurakuntamme juhlaa, jolloin katekismuslapsemme saivat ensikommuunionsa. Kääntymyksiäkin on tapahtunut, ja tänään pieni Vivian saa kasteen lahjan.

Psalmi antaa meille tämän saarnan mietiskelyn aiheen: “Me olemme Hänen kansansa: Hänen laitumensa lampaat.”

He sylkivät Häntä ja kääntyivät pois.

Juuri näille miehille uskotaan Kirkon sakramentti hoidettavaksi. Siksi on siunaus, että meillä on tähän tarkoitukseen vihitty palvelija.

Apostolien kautta olemme apostolinen Kirkko, perustettu Kristuksen päälle apostolien palvelutyön kautta.

Vivian pyrkii tänään tulemaan osaksi Jumalan kansaa.

Kasteen kautta Vivianista tulee osa Jumalan kansaa.

XI ORDINARY SUNDAY – A 2026
Brothers and sisters, I thank God Almighty, who has looked upon our parish with mercy and has made it possible for us to be a people worthy of His name. Through His fidelity, this very church has seen many people receive the gifts of heaven.

Two Sundays ago, we celebrated the feast of our parish, during which our young catechism children received their First Communion. Conversions have also occurred here, and today little Vivian will receive the gift of baptism.

The Psalm gives us the theme of our meditation during this sermon: “We are His people, the sheep of His flock.”

This is an affirmation that declares our standing before God and man, between our passing time and the eternity of God’s time. We declare that we belong to God.

However, the word used here is “people,” which means that this belonging is not individualistic in nature, but communal.

On the feast of the Blessed Trinity, I taught here that God, in His oneness, is communal. He reflects this communion in our human life by making us all dependent on a father and a mother, who form a family.

Brothers and sisters, this communal nature of God was also communicated by God to Israel. He made them a holy people, founded upon the promise made to Abraham, recognizable through the twelve tribes that constituted the people, and bound by the covenant introduced by Moses.

But we know that when this process was to be fulfilled by the promised Messiah, the Jews rejected the Son of God, together with their priests and leaders. Christ was rejected in favor of Caesar, as they proclaimed: “We have no king but Caesar.”

Thus, the long theocracy that governed the chosen people was abolished. They spat upon Him and turned away.

But we have seen a constant example in the Old Testament: the younger brother takes the birthright of the older brother, as in the case of Esau and Jacob. We have seen the younger Joseph leading the older sons of Jacob, and young Samuel being anointed over his brothers.

Thus, the mystery is fulfilled. Christ calls Israel, but she turns away toward idolatry. So Christ forms a new nation from the old roots of Jesse.

He calls the Twelve, as we read in today’s Gospel. This marks the beginning of a new line of priesthood, distinct from the Levitical order.

It is to these Twelve that He carefully teaches the mystery of God’s kingdom. He gives them the power to continue His mission of salvation on earth.

He made Peter His Vicar on earth, thereby restoring the Davidic theocracy. Christ is King, but kings have always exercised authority on earth in the name of the Lord. Symbolically, the keys and the scepter were given to the old kings.

Thus, Peter is given the key to speak in the name of the Lord: whatever he binds on earth is bound in heaven, and whatever he looses on earth is loosed in heaven.

It is to these men that the sacrament of the Church is handed over as its stewards. This makes it a blessing to have an ordained minister who serves this purpose.

It is through the apostles that we are an apostolic Church, founded upon Christ through the ministry of the apostles.

Today, Vivian seeks to become part of the people of God. This means that she will enter into a reality that is as old as time.

She enters into the promised nation made to Abraham, which comprises many nations. She enters into the priestly nation begun by Aaron, the high priest, and brought to perfection by Christ, the Anointed One.

By baptism, Vivian becomes part of God’s people. She enters into a covenant with God and becomes a child of God.

She is anointed king, priest, and prophet. This shows that she shares in the gifts of the Son of David, Christ the High Priest, and Jesus, the last prophet sent to us to proclaim the mystery of the Most High.

She is handed the flaming torch of victory, showing that she belongs to the light. She is vested with a white robe, marking her marriage with Christ. Thereby, she becomes a daughter of God and an heir to Christ’s eternal kingdom.

She becomes a royal priest who proclaims and defends the nation into which she is married.

Brothers and sisters, remember your baptism. Remember that you have chosen to be part of God’s nation.

It is true that you are born into an earthly nation. By law and charity, we ought to defend our nation and work hard for the good of those whom Providence has placed on our path as fellow citizens.

But we must also remember that our ultimate citizenship is in the City of God.

The earthly city and the heavenly city are two different cities. They can only be in conflict when we ourselves are compromised.

Remember that one has the goal of giving us passing goods, while the other gives us life and eternal life.

Let us therefore learn from our elder brother in faith. Although he had the beginning of the promise and the covenant, he nevertheless abandoned it and clung to Caesar and the world.

We, too, can be inside the promise and, due to greed and foolishness, sell our birthright for a plate of porridge to satisfy our stomach.

Let us make today a solemn act of faith: to remain faithful to our heavenly Father and to live in the communion of the Church, under the care and guidance of His Vicar on earth, Pope Leo XIV; our diocese, led by the bishop; and the local parish, led by the parish priest.

In this way, we remain part of a recognizable body descending from the heart of God through the apostles.
